DESCRIPTION:Running until June 18th\, Silhouettes: Fashion in the Shadow of HIV/AIDS explores the lives and works of some of fashion’s brightest stars from the late 20th century. Featured in this ground-breaking exhibition are works by designers\, artists and activists who have passed of AIDS-related illness to raise awareness of their contribution to fashion during a pivotal moment in history. \nOver 100 pieces of fashion\, art and ephemera – sourced from esteemed private and public collections from the UK\, USA and Australia – tell a story of changing hemlines\, changing worlds and changing attitudes. Showcasing household names like Halston and Moschino\, Silhouettes also features work from revolutionary black designers Patrick Kelly\, Fabrice Simon and Willi Smith\, and forgotten talents like Clovis Ruffin and Chester Weinberg. \nHIV/AIDS in fashion became an important activism tool to force social and political advancement\, and in many cases intersected couture designers and activist artists as they collaborated to affect change through fashion\, design\, and art. Australians Peter Tully\, David McDiarmid and Brenton Heath-Kerr brought this struggle to our streets with passion and panache. \nThe fashion designers\, artists\, and activists selected for Silhouettes exercised an outsized influence on fashion and almost all are unduly overlooked in recent years. DESCRIPTION:As part of our public programming for Silhouettes: Fashion in the Shadow of HIV/AIDS\, Rebecca Evans\, the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Curator of Decorative Arts & Design will be presenting Peter Tully\, Going for Baroque on Thursday 17 March\, 6PM at the David Roche Foundation House Museum. \nPeter Tully (1947-1992) was an Australian artist\, costume and jewellery designer\, activist and inaugural artistic director (1982–86) of the Sydney Gay (and Lesbian) Mardi Gras. DESCRIPTION:Running Nov 1 to Dec 3\, SAMESH present another world first exhibition\, this time documenting queer representation in DC and Marvel comic books\, with a close focus on HIV representation in the 1980’s and 1990’s. \nSAMESH team member\, Paul Stone\, has spent over a year researching the queer history of Marvel and DC comics\, beginning in the 1950s when the Comic Book Industry formed its own regulatory standards council known as the Comics Code Authority (CCA). The role of the CCA was to ensure all comic books sold in newsagents and newspaper stands abided by the code and were subsequently given approval to be sold. \nAmong the many standards\, the CCA stipulated that: \n\nSex perversion or any inference to same-sex attraction is strictly forbidden\nIllicit sex relations and sexual abnormalities are neither to be hinted at nor portrayed\nThe treatment of romance stories shall emphasise the value of home and the sanctity of marriage.\n\nKWEER is a preview exhibition that features a sampling of LGBTIQA+ content in Marvel and DC Comics from the inception of the CCA through to today. \nThese comics\, by some of the world’s best writers and artists\, represent the first appearance of queer superheroes and comic characters\, and address issues such as gender\, same-sex relationships\, homophobia\, HIV/AIDS\, and queer protest. \nWhether you are a queer history buff\, comic book lover\, or art lover\, KWEER has something for everyone. \nVisit the exhibition any time during Diverse-City’s opening hours.

SUMMARY:Phoenix Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Phoenix is a 1.5 day workshop for all people recently diagnosed with HIV\, providing a confidential and supportive space to learn how to deal with managing your HIV diagnosis. The workshop sessions are March 15 6-9pm\, and March 16 9am-5pm. \nYou may have been recently diagnosed or perhaps you have been living with HIV for some time. It is not necessarily about how long you have been living with HIV\, it’s about seeking the support and information you need. \nThe workshop is facilitated by peers living with HIV and will feature sessions from an HIV specialist doctor and a counsellor with experience working with clients living with HIV. \nThis is a free workshop\, and you don’t need Medicare to attend either. \nThe Friday evening introduction session includes pizza for supper\, and the Saturday full day session includes a healthy lunch\, as well as morning and afternoon tea. \nThe group has the option of attending (at participants own cost) a post-workshop social get-together.
