International AIDS Candlelight Memorial 2021

An intimate gathering met at SHINE SA Woodville on Sunday 16th May for the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial.

We had the privilege of hearing stories from community members punctuated with sadness, anger, resilience, hope, and love as they spoke about those lost to us and the impact HIV/AIDS has had on their lives. It was also a moment to acknowledge and honour the activists and community members who have dedicated their lives to HIV activism and breaking down stigma.

We also displayed one of the AIDS Memorial Quilts recently showcased in an exhibition with the support of the History Trust of South Australia. This allowed those in attendance to reflect on the individuals whose names featured on the quilt and on those whose names we do not see.

Started in 1983, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is a global event that is held on the third Sunday of May each year. It is open to anyone who has been affected by HIV/AIDS, with thousands of events organised across the world.

SAMESH partnered with Positive Life South Australia to coordinate the memorial.
