Sustainable Style Facilitators: Expressions of Interest Open

Introduction

Thorne Harbour Health (THH) is a community-controlled health organisation governed by our members and accountable to the communities we serve. THH began in July 1983 and for 40 years, the organisation has been a leader in the community’s response to HIV and AIDS. THH has been delivering services in South Australia for ten years. THH aims to improve the health, social and emotional well-being of LGBTIQ+ communities and those living with or affected by HIV, with a particular emphasis on bringing the HIV and AIDS epidemic to an end. Our mission is to deliver community-led, culturally appropriate health programs that reduce stigma, support rights advocacy, and enhance wellbeing.

Since 2015, THH has partnered with SHINE SA to deliver SAMESH, providing HIV/STI education in South Australia.

Sustainable Style

Since April 2023, Sustainable Style has provided monthly textile-based workshops in Adelaide for LGBTIQA+ and HIV+ individuals and allies, so that people of all ages and abilities can develop skills, share resources, and create affirming garments in sustainable ways. As feedback from participants demonstrates, the workshops help to overcome social isolation, foster intergenerational exchange, strengthen community, and enhance individual confidence, self-image, purpose and social-emotional wellbeing.

As part of funding from BUPA Foundation Community Grant, and to ensure the longevity of Sustainable Style, we are looking for volunteers to facilitate Sustainable Style and make a significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ people, and people living with HIV (PLHIV).

We want to build the capacity for six community members who will take on the role of peer leaders for the project following the grants conclusion. Volunteers will undertake fully funded training in cultural safety and inclusion, first aid, food safety, and basic machine maintenance.

Volunteer Opportunity

With BUPA Foundation funding, we’re training six volunteers to lead workshops long-term to attend and maintain our two monthly workshops (4th Friday and 2nd Saturday monthly). Successful applicants will receive free training in:

  • Cultural safety & inclusion
  • First aid
  • Food safety
  • Machine repair & garment design
